Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by progressive loss of bone mineral density resulting in a weakening of the bone architecture and an increased risk of fracture.  This weakening can cause fractures of the bone, most commonly of the wrist, hip, or spine.  Osteoporosis is caused by imbalance between bone resorption and new bone formation.  The most common causes of the disease include: aging, menopause, nutritional deficiency of calcium and/or vitamin D, chronic renal failure, chronic glucocorticoid abuse, hyperparathyroidism, and immobility.  Additionally, primary risk factors associated with osteoporosis include being female, Asian, Caucasian, thin/small in stature, alcoholism, and hypogonadism.  The disease itself has no symptoms until a fracture occurs due to brittle or fragile bones.  Osteoporosis may be prevented with calcium/vitamin D supplements, lifestyle modifications, and medication.

While no treatment can fully reverse established osteoporosis, medical therapy for the disease (such as bisphosphonates) and/or calcium and vitamin D supplementation can help.  Nutrition and exercise are critical factors in preventing osteoporosis as well as halting its progression.  We’ll educate you about foods that are rich in minerals and nutrients ideal for your bone health.  Incorporating foods that contain plenty of calcium and vitamin D are not only important to bone health but can also improve your overall health and well-being.  We can help you create a personalized meal plan that involves healthier food choices specific to fighting osteoporosis.

In addition to nutrition, exercise is also essential in the prevention and management of the disease.  Weight bearing exercise, for instance, can help build bone strength and maintain bone tissue once an individual has been diagnosed with osteoporosis.  We’ll provide you with the appropriate dietary guidelines as well as discuss an exercise program suitable for the stage of your current bone health.
